Dear Friends of CFHU,
In honour of International Women’s Day on Sunday, we salute the vital role of women at Hebrew University and celebrate the achievements of HU’s female faculty, students and alumni. Throughout the year, their impressive work is the source of great inspiration and pride for all of us at CFHU where we firmly believe a gender equal world is a better world.
While much progress has been made in recent years, there’s still a gender gap in graduate education, to the detriment of women and society at large. Providing doc and post doc awards is one way to close the gap and helps to qualify women for careers that will improve the quality of their lives and allow them to contribute more in their respective fields.
For International Women’s Day, we are proud to spotlight below a couple of HU’s many highly accomplished women as well as a noteworthy initiative addressing gender equality at HU and in Israel.
Dr. Hermona Soreq
Dr. Soreq is a professor at HU and a prominent researcher in brain sciences. She helped found the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences and has received several prestigious awards for her research. She’s written over 280 peer-reviewed journal articles and eight books.
Dr. Haya Lorberboum-Galski
Chair of IMRIC, (Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada) at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Dr. Lorberboum-Galskia directs IMRIC’s operations and its team of leading medical researchers working on important health-related problems. Part of HU’s Faculty of Medicine since 1989, she focuses her research on developing reagents for targeted human therapy, cancer, metabolic diseases, immune responses and mechanisms of apoptosis.
The Lafer Center: Closing the Gap
Founded to further the understanding of women and gender, the Lafer Center for Women and Gender Studies bridges the gap between feminist theory and practice. The first of its kind in Israel, the center coordinates HU programs and offers courses at the M.A. level. Its goal is to create more academic research opportunities for women and to advance gender equality, both at the university and in Israeli society.
