On March 30, 2019 CFHU (Edmonton Chapter) and Beth Shalom Synagogue co-hosted a lecture by Dr. Catherine Caufield, as part of the synagogue’s ongoing Adult Education lecture series.

Dr. Caufield is a visiting fellow at Concordia University of Edmonton in the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies. She spoke about the expression of religious experience as reflected in the writings of Jewish-Canadian women. Her review of both poetry and prose provided an understanding of how diverse religious and (public) secular experiences inform and are reflected in the writing of Jewish-Canadian women across time. Dr. Caufield was awarded a Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Grant by the Government of Canada to study the subject.

She has been invited to deliver her paper on the topic at the Halbert Centre for Canadian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in May 2019 at the annual meeting there of the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies. She is excited to visit Hebrew U. and says that her lecture there will be just one of the highlights of her first trip to Israel.
