Duvdevan soldiers

The transition from soldier to civilian is one of the most complex junctures in the lives of young men and women serving in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). For members of Duvdevan, the IDF’s counter-terror, special operations unit, the issues are particularly pronounced.

In recent years, the unit has attracted much attention due to its role on the popular series “Fauda” on Netflix. But whereas the show features actors in their 30 and 40s, in reality Duvdevan consists of soldiers only in their early 20s.

Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Oded Dayan, a Duvdevan alumnus and CEO of the Duvdevan Foundation. Founded in 1992, it provides financial and emotional support to graduates of the unit. As a result of this meeting, we’re pleased to share with you that the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University, working together with the Foundation, will raise funds to provide former Duvdevan soldiers with opportunities associated to higher education, including;

  • Creation of at least four new university scholarships to be used within two years of leaving the army, based on socio-economic criteria and meaningful service.
  • In collaboration with The Hebrew University Asper Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, we will develop a specialized program to support students who wish to develop independent businesses.
  • A curricula that pays special attention to post-traumatic stress disorder, which afflicts many former Duvdevan soldiers.

My wife and I have started the ball rolling, joining with friends, each of us contributing $5K to create a financial aid student award valued at $15K.

We encourage you to consider supporting this incredible effort – a full scholarship for a former soldier to attend university in Israel costs 40,000 NIS – roughly $15K Canadian.

You may choose to create groups of any size to reach the $15,000 needed. If you would like us to pair you with other donors to reach the $15K goal, please let us know.

We hope to raise the funds necessary to create the awards before Tuesday, October 29, when we will welcome Oded to Winnipeg and celebrate surpassing our goal! So please save the date and stay tuned for more details.

If you need more information please contact Ayala Davis at adavis@cfhu.org or contact me directly at mpalay@quadrantprivate.com. We would be happy to chat.
