Reflections on My Time at Hebrew University

By Glorie Averbach, Vancouver

Having grown up with a mom who role-modeled a lifelong dedication to supporting Israel and working for Israeli causes, attending the one-year program at Hebrew University, if not expected, was certainly (happily) pre-ordained from birth.

An incredible year of travel, an invaluable learning opportunity, meaningful personal growth and, of course, the lifelong friendships, all punctuate the influence and life impact of the one-year program.

As a political junkie and a political science major, I couldn’t imagine a more profound environment than Hebrew University. There is an academic standard of excellence, integral to the school’s culture, that simply put, makes for an incredible place to learn. Often the professors who teach you are themselves a part of the politics or history they’re teaching. And, if not a part of it, they had a front row seat.

I remember one class in particular being held at the Knesset. Abba Eban, the lifelong Israeli diplomat and politician was the class guest speaker and at the time he was the Chair of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Amazing!

And when classes weren’t holding our attention, boy, did we have fun. So many stories that will stay with me forever, the details barely faded after all these years.

So grateful for having had the experience. So fun to reflect on it now.
