Reflections on my time at Hebrew U

By Bonny Reichert, Toronto

I had a friend from BBYO who had done the year study abroad program at Hebrew U and couldn’t stop talking about what a fantastic time she had. Back then it wasn’t so common for people to do a year abroad and I was amazed when my parents gave me the green light to go. So off I went to study at Hebrew U in 1987-88 having no real sense of what was to become.

In addition to the One Year Program I was also allowed to take a film studies and English course in the regular school, which added even more dimension to the experience.

How did going to Hebrew U impact my life? Wow so many ways. I made friendships to last a lifetime, I developed a permanent love and attachment to Israel and, ta da! I met Michael Gelfand, the man who eventually became my husband was also on the one-year program that year too.

I am so honoured to be included in this list and to imagine that I had even a fraction of the impact on the program that it had on me. It was a totally life-altering experience.
