From the Peak of Mount Scopus

“The Love For Israel Breaks Borders”: Experiences and impressions from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

It has been almost a week since I landed in Toronto and I feel as though I’m still there. The peak of Mount Scopus, Givat Ram, Ein Kerem in Jerusalem and the agricultural campus in Rehovot were the places I visited during the short trip to Israel.

92 years after the groundbreaking of Hebrew University and 85 years since the Mount Scopus campus officially opened, I stood on the same ground on which thousands of respected guests stood during the opening ceremonies, among them Chaim Weizmann, Bialik, Lord Balfour, Rabbi Kook, Herbert Samuel and many others. Today that historic hill serves as an amphitheatre, from which one can see from every angle the beautiful landscape of Jerusalem which includes the Old City’s walls.

Approximately 24,000 students study in the four campuses of the university. I had the great privilege of meeting faculty members, researchers, scientists, and Israeli and Canadian students, all of whom left me open-mouthed after each visit to the laboratories, faculties and the different buildings of the university. In the crowded labs and under pressure, I watched as the research took place and as side by side the top names worked with students in their twenties. During those moments I felt as if I was a part of the realization of the dream to open a university in Israel, an idea which came up in 1884.

As the opening article in this series, I thought of bringing my impressions of my meetings with senior faculty members who mentioned the profound work of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University. I wanted to tell of the many interesting scientific studies taking place or of new inventions. I thought about sharing my experiences of the visit to the Albert Einstein Archive in the Givat Ram campus which includes all the writings of the Jewish professor who passed them on to the university. I will speak about all these things in future installments of this series about the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and its Canadian friends who recently supported the building and founding of the Israel-Canada Centre for Medical Research at the Ein Kerem campus, which is next to the Hadassah hospital.

A meeting with Jewish-Canadian students in the halls of the Rothberg International School brought me to the conclusion that the first article would be dedicated to those students who chose to leave behind their families and travel all the way to Jerusalem. “The love for Israel breaks all borders” was my conclusion after speaking with these students.

Oleg Portnoy, 26, was born in Moscow. His parents immigrated to Israel and several years later moved to Toronto. He graduated from York University and is currently completing a degree in Social Sciences. He said that he chose to study in Jerusalem as a first step towards integrating in Israeli society and returning home. “This is my home and the home of all the Jews,” said Oleg who at the age of 10 had to join his parents when they moved to Canada.

Hailey Leibteig, 20, from Hamilton is currently in Israel for the fourth time. She arrived in Israel to voluntarily teach Hebrew in Eilat and decided to stay and study Foreign Policy and Architecture. “I am absolutely crazy about Israel and happy to meet some wonderful people every day. I’m planning to stay here until June and then decide if I’m going to make aliyah,” she said and added that her worried parents will be coming for a visit soon.

I met Paula Garshowitz, 23, from Thornhill and Mirel Leder- Schlesinger, 22, from Toronto in the lounge of the international school. They are both considered veteran students and currently live in rented apartments in the Jerusalem neighbourhoods of Katamon and the German Colony. They are already fluent in Hebrew and told me how quickly they integrated into social life in the city and into school life. “Every Jewish student in the world should experience something like this,” says Paula, who is a graduate of CHAT’s Richmond Hill campus.

“I’m taking advantage of this opportunity in order to thank and say hello to the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University in Toronto and to Moshik Galanti the director who have helped us along the way,” says Mirel.

It’s been almost a week since I’ve returned to Toronto. I am thousands of kilometers west of the Holy City, yet my heart and thoughts are still in the east. The people I met for the first time in my life did not try to show their talents but rather tried to explain, each in his or her own way, the importance of the first Hebrew university in Israel.

 האוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים - חוויות ורשמים

כמעט שבוע לאחר הנחיתה בטורונטו ונדמה שאני עדיין שם.פסגת הר הצופים, גבעת רם, עין כרם בירושלים וקמפוס לחקלאותברחובות היו מוקדי העלייה לרגל שלי בביקור הקצר בישראל.

92 שנים לאחר הנחת אבן הפינה לאוניברסיטה העברית בירושליםו 85- שנים מאז נפתח רשמית קמפוס הר הצופים, דורכות רגליי עלאותה אדמה סלעית ומישורית שעליה באו ונאספו לטקס הפתיחהאלפי מכובדים, ביניהם חיים ויצמן, חיים נחמן ביאליק, הלורדבלפור, הרב קוק, הרברט סמואל ואחרים. היום משמשת אותהגבעה היסטורית כאמפיתיאטרון כאשר מכל זווית שהיא צופותעיני המתבונן בנוף מרהיב הכולל את חומות העיר העתיקה.

באותם ארבעה קמפוסים שעליהם נמנים כעשרים וארבעה אלףסטודנטים, נפלה בחלקי הזכות לפגוש באנשי הסגל, חוקרים,מדענים, וסטודנטים ישראלים וקנדים שהותירו אותי פעור פה והמוםלאחר כל מפגש וסיור במעבדות, בפקולטות ובמבנים השונים.באותן מעבדות דחוסות וצפופות, בתנאי לחץ קשים עקבתי אחרעבודות המחקר כאשר זה לצד זה עושים מלאכתם אנשי שם בכלתחומי המחקר ותלמידיהם בשנות העשרים לחייהם. באותם רגעיםחשתי כשותף להגשמת החזון הציוני להקמת אוניברסיטה בארץישראל, הצעה שעלתה כבר בשנת 1884 בוועידת קטוביץ.

חשבתי ככתבת פתיח להביא רשמים מפגישותיי עם ראשי הסגלבאוניברסיטה, שציינו והדגישו את הפעילות הברוכה והענפה שלאגודת ידידי האוניברסיטה בקנדה ובטורונטו בפרט.

רציתי לספר על המחקרים המדעים בעלי תכנים מרתקים ועלחידושים והמצאות. שאפתי לשתף אתכם בחוויות מהביקור בארכיון"אלברט איינשטיין" בקמפוס גבעת רם, ארכיון המכיל את כלכתבי היד של הפרופסור היהודי שדאג להוריש זאת לאוניברסיטההעברית.

את התכנים הנ"ל אביא בהמשך סדרת הכתבות אודות האוניברסיטההעברית בירושלים והשוחרים בקנדה, שביוזמתם ותרומתם נבנהונחנך לאחרונה המרכז לחקר רפואי ישראל-קנדה בקמפוס עיןכרם, הצמוד לבית החולים הדסה.

מפגש עם סטודנטים יהודים קנדים במסדרונות בית הספר ללימודיחו"ל ע"ש רוטברג בקמפוס הר הצופים הביא אותי למסקנה שהכתבההפותחת תוקדש דווקא לבני הדור הצעיר, אותם סטודנטים שבחרולהשאיר מאחור בקנדה את בני המשפחה ולנדוד עד לירושלים."האהבה לישראל פורצת כל גבולות" - זו המסקנה העולה משיחותייעם אותם סטודנטים.

אולג פורטנוי ) 26 ( מטורונטו והיילי ליבטייג ) 20 ( מהמילטון ממתינים בסבלנות כמו יתר הסטודנטים להכנס למשרד האדמיניסטרציה ל"סידורים אחרונים"כדבריהם לאחר שנרשמו לקורסים שונים.

אולג יליד מוסקבה שהוריו עלו לישראל ולאחר שנים נדדו לטורונטו, בוגר אוניברסיטת יורק, משלים תואר במדעי החברה, מדגיש שבחר ללמוד בירושלים כצעד ראשון להשתלבות בחברה הישראלית ושיבה הביתה. "כן, זה הבית שלי ושל היהודים כולם," מדגיש אולג שבעל כורחו נאלץ להצטרף להוריו בנסיעתם לקנדה בעודו בן 10.

היילי, שזה לה הביקור הרביעי בישראל, הגיעה ללמד בהתנדבות את השפה האנגלית בעיר אילת והחליטה להמשיך בלימודיה במדיניות חוץ וארכיאולוגיה. "אני מוטרפת על המדינה ושמחה להכיר אנשים נפלאים מדי יום. בשלב זה אשאר פה עד חודש יוני ואז אחליט באם לעשות עליה," היא אומרת ומדגישה שההורים המודאגים יבואו לבקר בקרוב.

את פולה גרשוביץ ) 23 ( מת'ורנהיל ומירל לידר-שלזינגר ) 22 ( מטורונטו אני פוגש בטרקלין בית הספר לתלמידי חו"ל. שתיהן נחשבות לוותיקות בקרב הסטודנטים ומתגוררות בדירות שכורות בשכונות קטמון והמושבה הגרמנית. השפה העברית כבר שגורה בפיותיהן של השתיים. "רק מילים יפות," הן מצחקקות ומספרות על ההתאקלמות המהירה והחיובית בחיי החברה בעיר ובמסגרת הלימודים. "כל סטודנט יהודי בעולם חייב להתנסות בחוויה שכזו.

אתה מגלה שיש לך למעשה משפחה אחת גדולה בארץ ישראל," אומרת פולה, בוגרת בית הספר התיכון צ'אט בריצ'מונד היל. "אני מנצלת הזדמנות זו להודות ולהעביר ד"ש לידידי האוניברסיטה בטורונטו ולמושיק גלנטי מנהל התוכניות ללימודים אקדמיים המסייעים לנו לכל אורך הדרך בהתאקלמות," מדגישה מיכל.

כמעט שבוע בטורונטו, אלפי קילומטרים מערבית מעיר הקודש אך ליבי ומחשבותיי עדיין שם במזרח. אותם עשרות אנשים שפגשתי לראשונה בחיי לא התאמצו בכדי להוכיח את כישוריהם בתחומי החינוך, מדע ומחקר אלא ניסו להסביר, כל אחד בדרכו, את החשיבות של קיומה והמשך התפתחותה של האוניברסיטה העברית הראשונה בארץ ישראל.

כמעט שבוע בטורונטו וחש עדיין מקפץ ואפילו מרחף על פסגת העולם - פסגת הר הצופים.
