Earlier this year, the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University and VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation embarked on the campaign to raise $2 million, shared equally between the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Vancouver General Hospital. The common vision of improved mens health brought the well-respected institutions together, to partner in the initiative and to collaborate on prostate research and mens health issues for future generations.

At VGH, the Centre of Excellence for Mens Health, led by Dr. Goldenberg, will be the first integrated research clinical program in Canada that is focused exclusively on mens medicine. By studying the unique health related needs of men, the program will coordinate research into andropause, sexual health, fertility, osteoporosis, cardiovascular health, mental health and psycho social issues. The Mens Health program will study risk factors such as biological inheritance, personal health practices, childhood development, in order to design and deliver more effective health promotion, disease prevention and harm reduction initiatives, guide the development and refinement of clinical diagnostic and therapeutic protocols, and lead to improved health outcomes for men.
At the Hebrew Universitys Faculty of Medicine, the new Institute of Medical Research (IMR), will bring together a powerful intellectual community of top scientists to facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach to biomedical research. The priorities of this Institute will include cancer, infectious diseases and immunology, genetics and developmental biology, nutrition and metabolism and cardiovascular disease research. Among the priorities in cancer research, prostate cancer will be a focus. New and innovative projects that will be developed through the IMR will contribute to the formation of a platform for the future development of novel therapies for prostate and other forms of cancer.

Over the years, Hebrew U and the UBC & VGH Hospital have made contributions to the communities that they serve, at the local, national and international levels. The Gala was an evening to remember , attended by such provincial dignitaries as the Honorable Premier Gordon Campbell, Premier, Wally Oppal - Attorney General and Minister of Multiculturalism, Stan Hagen- Minister of Tourism , Sport and the Arts, and Gregor Robertson, MLA.
Many friends of Hebrew U, VGH, community leaders, and dignitaries all paid tribute to Dr. Goldenberg, as well as to the outstanding achievements represented by the partnering organizations. Sam Hanson, President of CFHU, Vancouver Chapter, was the Master of Ceremonies, providing humour as well as passion to the evenings proceedings.
Premier Gordon Campbell addressed the audience and shared his vision for Excellence in Medical Research in British Columbia and the need to have International collaborations.
Carmi Gillon Vice President for External Affairs of the Hebrew University and Ron Dumouchelle, President and CEO, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, spoke briefly about the work of their respective institutions, and praised the two initiatives launched with this event. Both gentlemen highlighted the tremendous potential for collaboration and cooperation between HU and VGH, and praised Dr. Goldenberg for having the vision and determination to develop this partnership.
Dr. Lawrence Sullivan and Dr. Peter Cooperberg colleagues and friends also spoke words of praise for Dr. Goldenberg.
The Hebrew Universitys highest recognition, the Scopus Award, was presented to Dr. Goldenberg by the HU Vice-President for External Affairs, Carmi Gillon. However, the greatest gift that Dr. Goldenberg received at the event were surely the humorous and loving words spoken by his two sons, Adam and Mitchell. Their tribute spoke volumes about his success as a father- a man generous with his time, wise with his advice and unconditional with his encouragement, support and love.
A standing ovation concluded Dr. Goldenbergs address. He spoke frankly to the issue of mens health and the need for increased education, diligence in self-care, creative research and potential cures. His broad brushed remarks were delivered with humour and passion and left no one in doubt about his deep commitment to achieving his goals. He lauded the HU/VGH partnership and made everyone believe that anything is possible. He recognized the contributions of his medical colleagues and challenged them and the younger generation of physicians to join him in his journey for improved mens health.
Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation wish to thank all who have contributed to the success of the campaign and this special evening: Bev Libin, Event Chair, for leading a wonderful gala committee; Honorary Co-Chairs, Peter J. G. Bentley and Leon Glassman; staff and volunteers; those who attended to show their support for Dr. Goldenberg and our collaborative initiatives; and to all our donors whos have ultimately made this vision a reality.
