Former Rothberg International School studentsJerusalem, Dec. 13, 2012 — Former students of the Preparatory Program–Mechina at the Hebrew University's Rothberg International School (RIS) will reconnect with past and present advisors, administrators and teachers at a special 40th Anniversary Event on December 16, 2012. The celebration marks 40 years of helping students from Israel and around the world successfully integrate into Israeli society.

The RIS Preparatory Program–Mechina prepares recent high school graduates and recently discharged soldiers to continue their undergraduate studies in Israel and improve their chances for admission to the Hebrew University. The program is a mosaic of languages, cultures and backgrounds, with students who speak Russian, Arabic, French, Spanish, English, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese and many other languages.

Many Mechina alumni have successfully integrated into Israeli society and are currently working in a wide range of professions as teachers, doctors, lawyers, researchers, university professors, government advisors and more.

"I look forward to meeting generations of former Mechina students, celebrating their success, and joining them in expressing gratitude to the dedicated staff who have worked so hard to make that success possible."

Following greetings from Hebrew University President Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson and Rothberg International School Provost Prof. Mimi Ajzenstadt, Israeli poet Roni Somek and comedian Vladimir Fridman will present an artistic program. The year-long Mechina program includes language instruction and academic studies, serving as a gateway to the Hebrew-speaking Israeli society while helping students refine the skills necessary for entering the University in the following year. The program consists of intensive Hebrew and English language instruction, courses in Jewish History and Israel Studies, Statistics/Mathematics, and introductory courses that are recognized by certain departments in the faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences and Science. Two study paths are offered: Exact and Life Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences.
