Dr. Larry Goldenberg Awarded Order of Canada

Dr. Larry GoldenbergOn December 30, 2009 in Ottawa, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, announced  57 new appointments to the Order of Canada, among them Dr. Larry Goldenberg. The new appointees include 25 Officers (O.C.), and 32 Members (C.M.).

Dr. Larry Goldenberg, professor and head of the department of urologic sciences at the University of B.C. and Vancouver General Hospital, received his award for his "contributions to prostate cancer research and treatment as well as for promoting public awareness of the disease."

Goldenberg is world renowned for his prostate cancer research and was recently honoured at a Vancouver CFHU Gala Dinner that raised $2 Million to support two new and exciting medical projects - the Mens Health Institute at VGH and the Hebrew University's Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada (IMRIC). His integrated program at VGH to diagnose, treat and support men and keep them healthy longer was called "innovative and world-leading" in 2008 by Ron Dumouchelle, the president of VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation.

The Order of Canada, one of our country's highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada's centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Over the last 40 years, more than 5000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
