Canadians Honoured at the 78th Board of Governors Conference

78th Board of Governors Meeting

At the recently held 78th Board of Governors Meeting of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, several distinguished Canadians were honoured and many scholarships were given from Canadian donors to worthy Hebrew University student recipients. Celebrations also took place in honour of the Hebrew University's 90th anniversary and Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity

Highlights included the annual Canadian awards evening and 5 Special Canadian dedications which took place to honour individuals who have contributed generously to Hebrew University over the years: Montreal's Alvin Segal was conferred with an Honourary Doctorate; Montreal's Bernard Shuster was bestowed with an Honourary Fellowship; Alvin Segal, and Toronto's Sylvia Soyka and Marc-Adam Soyka-Steinman were honoured at the Wall of Benefactors; Monette Malewski, Bernard Shuster and Lou & Sylvia Vogel were honoured at the Wall of Life, and the ceremony dedicating the Alex U. Soyka Pancreatic Cancer Research Project took place at IMRIC.  

Anna Brojde and her family hosted a luncheon at the Peter Brojde Centre, Alvin Segal hosted a lunch with Revivim program students and the annual Alex U. Soyka Tennis Tournament took place for community youth. This year the pre BOG program begun with with a Canada-Israel initiative - Dragon Boat Israel.  Teams paddled on the Jordan river and raised funds in support of Autism research and programs at the Hebrew University.

Canadian Awards Dinner

The annual Canadian Awards Dinner was hosted by Murray Palay, CFHU National Chair, where we paid tribute to Canadian honourees as well as awarding scholarships.

BoG 2015 - Canadian Dinner

During the evening the following scholarship awards were given to deserving Hebrew University students.

  • Lenny Shapiro Doctoral Scholarships
  • Alex Soyka z’l Ph.D Scholarship in Pancreatic Cancer Research at IMRIC
  • Scholarship Awards at the Peter Brojde Centre for Innovative Engineering and Computer Science
  • The Lillian and Bryant Shiller Doctorate Scholarship

Also awarded were the Ph.D Prizes in Excellence, each Prize matched by the Hebrew University giving each recipient a substantial award that can be of significant assistance in his or her studies or research.  Prizes awarded included:

  • The Stephen and Irene Lipper Prize in Jewish Studies
  • Stephen Robert z"l Memorial Prize in International Relations
  • The Alan Brown z"l Memorial Prize in Environmental Studies
  • The Maurice and Faye Kaufman z"l Memorial Prize
  • The Johanna Friedlander z"l Memorial Prize
  • The Toronto Alumni and Friends Prize in Cancer Research at IMRIC
  • David Kline Prize in Dentistry

Dragon Boat Israel

The Pre-BOG program took place in the Kineret with the Canada-Israel initiative, Dragon Boat Israel. Our own IMRIC Beavers joined 40 other teams from around the world to race along the Jordan River in support of Autism research and programs at the Hebrew Universtiy.
