That was the message of the African participants in a week-long workshop in February of Pears Foundation alumni of the International Master of Public Health program of the Braun Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Public Health and Community Medicine. While living in Vancouver, I spent many hours on planes, traveling to Toronto and Israel to see family. I once sat next to a young guy on a flight between Toronto and Vancouver (don't ask me which direction!). I told him that I've lived in Toronto, Jerusalem and Vancouver. He was so excited - he'd only ever lived in a small town in Ontario and in Vancouver - and when I asked him what was so great about that, he said that I must have a much broader view of the world than him. I felt all sappy Zionistic today at my niece's Chanukah play. There are four grade fives in her school which is a public religious school in Efrat, around 20 minutes outside of Jerusalem. Together they put on a show to end all fifth grade shows. But what really got me choked up (and lets pretend for a moment that it's not easy to get me emotional) was the contrast between this Chanukah party and celebrating Chanukah last year in Vancouver.
