Alumni Spotlight - Berry Meyerowitz
Berry Meyerowitz is the president and chief executive officer of Phase 4 Films, a company that distributes feature films, television and special interest content in North America. He’s a married father of four who lives in Toronto. He attended Hebrew University from 1992 to 1993.
What was your most memorable experience at Hebrew University?
I have so many amazing memories, including going on weekend trips as part of the hiking club, and playing basketball with other Canadians, Americans and Israelis on the court on Mount Scopus. I remember looking out over Jerusalem at sunset. It was amazing. I also made a lot of great friends there, one of whom introduced me to my wife.
How did your time there make an impact on your development professionally and personally?
I was 21 years old when I started at Hebrew University. I was immersed in a foreign culture. It led me to think a lot about my surroundings, to become curious about other people’s lives and beliefs. It was just five years after the [first] intifadah, so it was an interesting time.
How did you get started in your current career?
My brother introduced me to one of his friends, who was working for Astral Entertainment, a big media company. When that person left to start a new company, I became his first employee. Phase 4 Films is the company’s fourth incarnation.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I sold my company in 2006 and, three years later, led a group to buy it back. That was a big moment in my career because it was a complicated transaction with lots of moving parts. We’re now more than three years old, and are building our business and our great team amid a digital revolution.
Where do you want to be in 10 years?
I hope to be in a similar place, continuing to build Phase 4 Films into one of the leading independent film distributors in North America. And hopefully there will be a few trips to the Academy Awards for our films. Also, we would like to make more trips to Israel in the next ten years than we did in the last ten years.
What are a few of your favourite things in terms of movie, food, restaurants, vacation spot, etc.?
My favourite place is our farm just outside Collingwood, Ontario. It’s a magical place where “Daddy Camp” is in full swing. In terms of activities, I love going to the movies. I don’t go as often as I would like, but when I do, it reinforces that fact that I’m very lucky to be part of this business. I also love coaching my kids and playing sports with them, including soccer, tennis and basketball. I am really enjoying playing tennis these days.
